Therapeutic Recreation

The Therapeutic Recreation (TREC) funding program allows children with special needs the opportunity to interact with peers and their community in recreational activities that support the teaching of life-long skills. Woodfords assists families in applying for funding and also guides families through the process of finding therapeutic activities. This funding support is provided by the State of Maine’s Children Behavioral Health Services (CBHS) and is administered by Woodfords Family Services.

Woodfords Family Services will no longer be accepting T-Rec Applications starting July 1, 2011.

All funds may be requested from DHHS by downloading a flex fund form from the State of Maine Website and following the directions there. If you have any questions, they can be directed to Michelle Armstrong of DHHS at 822-0243. We have left the following information here for reference purposes only.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Therapeutic Recreation funding, a child must be receiving Case Management services or be eligible for Case Management services and his/her diagnosis must be one or more of the following: Developmental Delay, Mental Retardation, Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) or documentation of an emotional or behavioral disability.

Application Process

TREC requests can be made for a number of activities with a possible total approval amount of up to $150.00 per child, per fiscal year, as funds allow. There is no guarantee that a child will be approved for this amount or even the total amount requested. A separate application must be submitted for each activity and child.

Completed applications will be accepted and processed starting on the 1st day of the quarter on a first come, first served basis.  If the 1st should fall on a weekend or holiday, applications will be accepted and processed starting on the next business day. Complete applications must be returned by mail (faxed copies are not acceptable) with a Letter of Support and a copy of a current evaluation (within the last 3 years).

The Letter of Support from a case manager, doctor, therapist, or counselor must state the child's name, date of birth, diagnosis, and how the requested therapeutic recreation activity is expected to teach the child long-lasting life skills relevant to their diagnosis and how it will be financially sustained throughout the year.

Approval Process

If the TREC request is approved the family will receive a letter of approval and a billing form. The family must give a copy of the approval letter and the billing form to the recreation provider. The billing form or an invoice must be received within 30 days of the indicated start date on the approval letter. If a billing form or invoice is not received within 30 days, then the bill becomes the financial responsibility of the family. Direct reimbursement to the parent or guardian is not allowed.
