Welcome To Big School

Our state CDS Director, Debra Hannigan, makes the distinction between CDS services and kindergarten by calling our public schools “Big School.”  Besides making many of us smile, this is actually an effective way to think of the transition.  CDS services are family focused and often in small sites.  This makes kindergarten seem, indeed, like BIG school.

I have more years of experience as a special education teacher and special services director than I may want to admit.  All those years tell me that we’ve never lost a child in Big School.  If you are a parent of a child making the transition to kindergarten, think of the parts of the school that your child will be using.  You’ll find it is not the entire school and, therefore, the transition is more likely to be from “littler school” to “little school.”  It will be most important for you to know your child’s special education teacher, kindergarten teacher, principal.  Once you are familiar with this little school, you can begin to expand your school world.  Everyone in Big School wants your child to succeed. The best way to make this happen is for all of us to work together.  We welcome you and your child to the Big School!
