Become a Respite Provider
Are you or is anyone you know interested in training to become a Certified Respite Provider*? Do you know a respite provider who may be interested in becoming certified?

The training does not take long and it means earning more money when providing respite for eligible children with special needs. Certified respite providers are paid an additional $2.00 per hour or $20.00 daily. For example, a Respite provider who is paid $5.00 - $9.00 per hour earns $7.00 - $11.00 per hour to care for a special needs child(ren) after becoming certified. If the daily rate is $90, a Certified Respite Provider earns $110.00.

But it's not just about the money. Respite providers are a real support to special needs children and their families. This is meaningful work that helps to strengthen our communities! In addition, those who complete the training and are put on the Certified Respite Provider Register are eligible for 2.7 CEU's (continuing education credits) granted by the University of Maine.

Certified Respite Providers care for children with special needs in the child's home, inthe provider's home, or in the community. Certified Respite Providers must be 18 years or older, and not living in the home of the child they provide services for. They are considered independant contractors and no taxes are withheld from their pay. Providers who earn more than $600.00 in the calendar year are issued a W1099 each year.

Certified Respite Providers receive 25 hours of State-mandated training on the respite system, working with children with special needs, understanding children and youth with emotional and behavioral disabilities, behavior management, providing safe and effective care, language and communication skills, and CPR and First Aid. Certified Respite Providers have Department of Health and Human Services background check, State Bureau of Identification criminal background check, and a Department of Motor Vehicle driving record check done every 2 years. Certified Respite Providers are also covered by the State of Maine's "Insurance Program for Foster Parents & Respite Care Providers".
